How to Find a Lost AirPods Case
The AirPods are on your desk -- but where is the case? Newer cases (AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4) emit their own Bluetooth signal, so FindMy can track them even when empty. Here is exactly what to do.

1. Open FindMy
Launch the app and scan nearby Bluetooth signals. The AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 case broadcast their own signal, so the case appears on the list even without the buds inside.
2. Walk the Signal
Use the precision radar and watch the signal bar. As you move closer to the case, the strength climbs. If the signal weakens, turn around -- you were heading away.
3. Pinpoint It
At maximum signal, the case is within arm's reach -- check jacket pockets, backpack sleeves, under the bed, and between couch cushions first. Those are where cases usually hide.
Which AirPods Cases Can Be Found?
AirPods Pro 2 Case
The Pro 2 case has its own U1 chip and speaker. It broadcasts Bluetooth even when empty, so FindMy can detect and guide you to it on its own.
AirPods 4 Case
The AirPods 4 charging case (wireless charging model) also supports independent tracking. Open FindMy and the case shows up as its own Bluetooth source.
Older Cases (AirPods 1, 2, 3, Pro 1)
Older cases do not emit Bluetooth on their own. If at least one AirPod is inside, FindMy tracks that. If the case is completely empty, use the workflow below.
Empty Old Case? Put a Bud Back In
If you can find one AirPod but not the case, drop the bud into the case, close the lid, and let FindMy track the pair. It is a simple workaround that works every time.
Where AirPods Cases Usually End Up
Coat and Jacket Pockets
Check every jacket you wore in the last 48 hours -- inside pockets, chest pockets, and the small zippered ones. Walk past each coat while FindMy is open.
Bag Compartments
Backpacks, gym bags, and laptop sleeves swallow cases. Unzip every compartment and hold your phone close so the signal can spike.
Between Cushions and Under Furniture
Couch cushions, car seats, and bed frames are classic hiding spots. A small case slips into a gap and the signal leaks through the fabric.
Desks, Nightstands, and Counters
Cases blend into clutter. Sweep around chargers, behind monitors, and near the kitchen counter where you plugged in your phone.

Most older AirPods charging cases do not emit Bluetooth on their own — only the earbuds do. The AirPods Pro 2 USB-C case and AirPods 4 case are the exceptions: both have a built-in U1/speaker and advertise Bluetooth independently, which is why FindMy can track those specific cases even when the earbuds are inside.
Which AirPods cases can be found via Bluetooth?
The AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) case and the AirPods 4 with ANC case both emit their own Bluetooth signal. Older Lightning cases (AirPods 1, 2, 3, AirPods Pro 1) do not and can only be located by tracking the earbuds inside.
My case is empty and lost — can I still find it?
If it is a Pro 2 USB-C or AirPods 4 ANC case, yes — it still advertises Bluetooth when empty. For older cases, an empty case is effectively invisible to any Bluetooth finder because the case itself has no radio.
How do I tell which case model I have?
Check the charging port. Lightning port = older model (case is not trackable on its own). USB-C port with a small hole for the speaker on the side = trackable case.
